A terrarium is a self-sustaining, low-maintenance indoor garden enclosed in glass. Follow these steps to create and care for one successfully.
Step 1: Gather Supplies
You'll need:
A clear glass container with a lid (for a closed terrarium) or open top (for an open terrarium)
Small pebbles or gravel (for drainage)
Potting soil (specific to your chosen plants)
Small plants suited for terrariums (e.g., mosses, ferns, succulents)
Decorative elements (optional, like stones or figurines)
Step 2: Build the Layers
Add drainage – Place a 1-inch layer of pebbles at the bottom to prevent water buildup.
Add soil – Use about 2-3 inches of soil appropriate for your plants.
Step 3: Plant Your Terrarium
Dig small holes for each plant and gently place them in.
Press soil around the roots to secure them.
Arrange plants by height, with taller ones at the back.
Step 4: Watering & Maintenance
Closed terrariums: Water lightly every few weeks; condensation indicates moisture levels. If too foggy, open the lid briefly.
Open terrariums: Water sparingly, especially for succulents. Let soil dry between watering.
Placement: Keep terrariums in bright, indirect light; direct sun can overheat them.
Trimming: Remove dead leaves and overgrown plants to maintain balance.
With the right setup and care, your terrarium will thrive as a beautiful, miniature ecosystem!
